Lindström was born and raised in Härjedalen, Sweden.  1944 he moved to Stockholm and begun his artistic studies at Isaac Grünewalds paint school. He came to study in Copenhagen and Chicago. In 1948 he moved to Paris and begun to study at André Lhotes and Fernand Légers paint schools. The summers he spent in Sweden, Sundsvall were he also had a studio, just outside of town.  2004 Bengt Lindström came to settle in Sundsvall permanently.

1954 Lindström had his first singel exhibition in Sweden. His international breakthrough came first after an exhibition in Paris in 1958.

Lindström was very productive and created mostly oil paintings which are easily recognised though their sharp colour in thick layers. The motives often portraites twisted faces and bodies, Lindström liked to portrait humans as natural and human as possible without any glorification.  He also made several puplic art works such as mural paintings and large out door sculptures. One of these sculptures are the large Y at Midlanda, Sweden. His largest singel art work is the silo painting at Åbyverket in Örebro.
